Experts List Causes of Sudden Death in Nigeria

Researches conducted by some Nigerian teaching hospitals have identified stroke and heart attack as the major causes of over 93.7 percent of the sudden and unexpected deaths (SUD) in the country.

The researchers also found that more males than females, at a ratio of 2:1, are affected, and the average age of the victims is “47.3 years. They blamed the rise in SUD on rural to urban migration, increased salt and fat intake from the consumption of processed foods, increased tobacco use and sedentary lifestyle.

The studies were conducted by the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba; Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTH); University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH); and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), among others.

Yeast infections: when to see a doctor

Most women will have a yeast infection at some point: 75 per cent of women get at least one during their lifetime. While there are plenty of over-the-counter treatments, there are times when it’s wise to see a doctor.
It’s perfectly normal to have yeast present in the vagina. It’s present about 20 per cent of the time, and it’s usually nothing to worry about, says Dr. Amanda Selk, a gynecologist at Women’s College Hospital. It’s only when it becomes overgrown and causes symptoms that it’s called a yeast infection. Symptoms can include itching, burning, painful intercourse, painful urination and a thick white clumpy discharge.

Exercise choices for better bone and joint health

Although physical condition and abilities vary widely between women, everyone can do some type of exercise, says Sonia Bibershtein, a physiotherapist with the Centre for Osteoporosis and Bone Health at Women’s College Hospital.

Osteoporosis Canada’s statistics show that one in three women and one in five men will have a fracture due to osteoporosis during their lifetime.

Why diabetes is a greater heart health risk for women than men

Diabetes is a major risk factor for heart disease in both men and women. However, it has a greater impact on women’s heart health than men’s.
“Diabetes appears to be a stronger risk factor for cardiovascular events in women than in men,” says endocrinologist Dr. Lorraine Lipscombe, director of the Centre for Integrated Diabetes Care at Women’s College Hospital. “If you compare cardiovascular events in women who have diabetes versus women who don’t have diabetes, the spread is greater than it is between men with diabetes and men without diabetes.”

HOW TO TREAT A VAGINAL INFECTION WITH A CLOVE OF GARLIC (By Judy Slome Cohain, CNM)

Garlic kills yeast. Those who bake bread know not to add garlic while the dough is rising or it will kill the yeast. Instead, garlic is added to the dough after it has risen, just before baking it in the oven.
A fresh garlic clove can easily cure a yeast infection. The trick is to catch the infection early. A woman who suffers from frequent yeast infections knows the feeling well. The first day, she feels just a tickle of itchiness that comes and goes. The next day, or sometimes two or three days later, the vaginal discharge starts to look white and lumpy like tiny bits of cottage cheese. By this time, she has a full-blown yeast infection and the lips of the vagina are often red and sore.
